WORCESTER – Sophomore Sofia Orrico's (Bethel, CT) header in the 24th minute proved to be the offensive difference as WPI edged Wheaton, 1-0, in a NEWMAC Women's Soccer match Tuesday night in Alumni Stadium.
With the win, the Engineers improve to 11-4 and 5-2 with their sixth consecutive triumph as the Lyons, who entered the game as the eighth-ranked team in the United Soccer Coaches regional poll, slip to 10-4-1 and 3-4.
Orrico one-timed a corner kick taken by sophomore Leah Beauton (Colchester, CT). In the waning moments of the game, freshman Jaime Rattenni (West Greenwich, RI) had a chance to send the contest into overtime but WPI senior Gabriela Hoops (Stonington, CT) smothered the ball to prevent the equalizer. Both Hoops and junior Alexa Barbagallo (Bridgewater, NJ) faced four shots on the night.
Junior Kristen McCrea (Weymouth, MA) paced the Engineers with six shots while Rattenni and senior Kaylee Sye (Acton, MA) each had a pair of chances for Wheaton.
In all, the Crimson and Gray enjoyed a 13-11 margin in the shot column and the Lyons had five of the game's eight corner kicks.
Both teams are on the road Saturday as WPI is at Wheaton at 1pm and Wheaton is at Mount Holyoke at noon.
