Medford, MA --- Sophie Lloyd (Los Altos, CA) and Sophia Wallach (Bethesda, MD) both registered first half goals then host Tufts held on to deal WPI women's soccer its first loss of the season, knocking off the Engineers 2-1 in a non-conference match-up played Thursday afternoon.
The Jumbos, ranked sixth in the initial United Soccer Coaches New England top 10, improve to 3-1 overall, while fifth-ranked Crimson and Gray slips to 4-1 on the year.
Trailing 2-0 at the half, WPI got to within a goal when Kristen McCrea (Weymouth, MA) and a foul in the box and then drilled home a penalty kick at 73:29. It was the team-leading sixth goal of the season for the senior tri-captain and 30th in her career.
Lloyd had opened the scoring for the hosts on an assist from Madeleine Pero (Corte Madera, CA) just 5:07 into the match and Wallach added to the lead on the final shot of the opening half off a feed from Claire Wilkinson (Fishers, IN) at 42:48.
Mandy St. Germain (Nipmuc, MA) totaled a career-best 10 saves in for the Engineers while Hayley Bernstein (New York, MA) registered six stops in net for the Tufts.
For the match, the Jumbos held a 21-7 edge in shots and attempt nine of the match's 11 corner kicks.
WPI returns home on Saturday to face Rhode Island College at 6:30pm. Tufts is off until Tuesday when they head to Brandeis for a 4pm match.
