WORCESTER -- Leah Beauton (Colchester, CT) netted a goal in each half to power the WPI women's soccer team to a 4-0 shutout of visiting Rhode Island College in a non-conference contest played on Saturday at Alumni Stadium.
Beauton put the hosts ahead in the 12th minute when a series of quick passes by Sofia Orrico (Colchester, CT) and Elizabeth Rocco (Fresh Meadows, NY) sent her in along on the goalie and she converted the breakaway opportunity. It looked that would be the only goal of the opening stanza, but Ava Schlesinger (Wilbraham, MA) knocked home a cross by Caitlin Bonavita ((Niskayuna, NY) after a scrum following a corner kick with just 23 seconds to go before the break.
The Crimson and Gray registered a pair of unassisted markers in the second half to close out the scoring. Beauton's fourth of the season, and 14th of her career, put WPI ahead 3-0 just 1:55 into the second half, while Kristen's McCrea's (Weymouth, MA) seventh of the year and 30th of her career closed out the scoring late in the 89th minute.
The Engineers, slotted fifth in the most recent United Soccer Coaches New England top ten, improves to 5-1 this fall, while the Anchorwomen are now 2-3 on the season.
Mandy St. Germain (Upton, MA) made two saves en route to her third clean sheet of the season. Erica Edwards (North Kingstown, RI) had 10 stops in net for the Anchorwomen.
The Engineers outshot the visitors 29-6, and had the edge in corner kicks 7-2.
Both teams have non-conference tilts on Tuesday. WPI is at Roger Williams at 7pm, while Rhode Island College heads to Regis for a 6pm kickoff.
