WORCESTER – Sofia Orrico (Bethel, CT) notched the lone goal as the WPI women's soccer team opened NEWMAC action with a 1-0 triumph over crosstown rival Clark Saturday afternoon in Alumni Stadium. In addition to four stops by Mandy St. Germain (Upton, MA), the Engineers received help in the form of a Georgie Cromwell (Mukilteo, WA) team save.
Cromwell made arguably the best stop of the day for the hosts just 37 seconds into the contest after St. Germain tangled with a Clark forward. Just over 15 minutes later, Orrico won a one-on-one matchup with a Cougar defender before depositing her fourth goal of the season at 15:47.
Julianna Christy (Plainville, CT) also made four saves for Clark. Maya Mashkuri (Montpelier, VT) accounted for three shots (all on-goal) and Jamie Joseph (Cazenovia, NY) added two more shots in the contest.
The guests were awarded six of the nine corner kicks while shots (10-10), shots on-goal (5-5) were even after 90 minutes of action.
WPI (7-1) continues a four-game homestand Tuesday with Roger Williams at 4pm. Clark (4-3) begins a three-game homestand with Elms Tuesday at 7pm.
