WORCESTER -- Felicia Lombardi (Malden, MA) blasted a goal with 7:19 remaining to lift visiting Coast Guard to a 2-1 victory over WPI in a NEWMAC women's soccer contest played Saturday afternoon in Alumni Stadium.
The result snaps a season-best equaling four-game winning streak for the Crimson and Gray. WPI ranked seventh in the latest United Soccer Coaches New England Top 10, dips to 8-2 on the season and 1-1 in conference play while Coast Guard improves to 3-6 overall and 2-0 against NEWMAC foes.
Lombardi took a feed from Brielle Pearce (Jupiter, FL) and shot a laser into the top right corner from the top of box for her second marker of the season.
After a scoreless first half, Coast Guard wasted no time denting the scoreboard just 31 seconds in the second stanza when Pearce jammed home a cross by Claire Hurley (Waterford, CT) for her third goal of the season. The hosts leveled the match midway through the second half when Ava Schlesinger (Niskayuna, NY) passed from left to right through the defenders to Sofia Orrico (Bethel, CT) her fifth goal of the year at 65:17.
The hosts nearly broke through in the 12th minute but had a goal waved off on an indirect kick from 16 yards away by Kristen McCrea (Weymouth, MA) which just missed the head of Orrico before going into the goal just to the left of the right post. Coast Guard's best opening half bid came in the 41st minute but Kat Stroh's (Lake Jackson, TX) shot from 10 yards out was blocked by Kristen Southan (Owings, MD).
Sarah Schollenberger (Woodbury, NJ) was strong in net for the Bears, recorded 10 saves while Mandy St. Germain (Upton, MA) was credited with one stop for the Boynton Hillers.
On the day, WPI enjoyed a 20-7 advantage in shots and a slight 3-2 edge in corner kicks.
WPI concludes a four game NEWMAC home stand on Wednesday, entertaining Babson at 3:30pm (note new date and time). Coast Guard is able back in action on Wednesday, hosting Wentworth at 4pm.
