WORCESTER -- Kristen McCrea (Weymouth, MA) accounted for the only goal of the game just 8:15 into the match and the WPI defense did the rest as the Engineers blacked visiting Babson 1-0 in a NEWMAC women's soccer match played Wednesday afternoon in Alumni Stadium.
With the result, WPI moves to 9-2 overall and 2-1 in conference action while the Beavers slip to 4-4-1 on the season and 0-1-1 against NEWMAC opponents.
McCrea did her damage early in the ninth minute when she took a pass from Elizabeth Rocco (Fresh Meadows, NY) at the top of the box, touched around a defender and shot low to the left side. The marker was McCrea's NEWMAC-leading 10th of the season and 34th of her career, breaking a tie for third all-time at WPI with Megan Forti '14.
WPI netminder Mandy St. Germain (Upton, MA) made one stop en route to posting her sixth shutout of 2019. The senior was aided by stingy backline defense from Ellie Patten (Scarborough, ME), Annika Keck (Oakland, CA), Jenna Hirshfeld, MA (Mukilteo, WA) and Kirsten Southan (Owings, MD). McCrea led the WPI offensive attack with four shots while Rocco, Lilly Proulx (New Boston, NH), Leah Beauton (Colchester, CT) and Josie Kim (San Jose, CA) all contributed multiple shots for the hosts.
Morgan Fedosiewich (Ottawa, ON) was solid in between the pipes for the guests, making seven saves on afternoon. Maggie McCabe (Weston, MA) and Sydney McLaughlin (Sherborn, MA) each notched three shots for the guest. Arguably, the Beavers best chance of the game came on a McCabe corner kick in the 62nd minute that found open space but went across the box untouched.
The Engineers outshot Babson 17-7 and attempted sixth of the match's seven corner kicks.
Both squads hit the road for NEWMAC contests on Saturday. WPI ventures to Northampton to tangle with Smith at noon while Babson heads to North to square off with Wheaton at 1pm.
