Northampton, MA --- Leah Beauton (Colchester, CT) scored twice and Mandy St. Germain (Upton, MA) stopped four shots as WPI went on the road and defeated Smith, 3-1, in a NEWMAC women's soccer matchup Saturday afternoon.
The win pushes the Engineers record to 10-2 overall and 3-1 in league action while the Pioneers even out at 5-5-1 and 1-2. WPI has now reached 10 wins for the fifth consecutive season and for the sixth time in seven years for head coach Steph Riley-Schafer.
Beauton and Smith's Jessica Matsuoka (Redding, CT) each netted a first half goal with the Engineers taking the initial lead at 16:36. The hosts knotted it back up just over seven minutes later at 23:41.
Just 2:37 into the second half, Beauton knocked home what proved to be the game-winner with help from Kirsten Southan (Owings, MD). Later in the frame, Lauren Kaija (Reading, VT) and Lilly Proulx (New Boston, NH) teamed up to make it 3-1 at 66:16.
Naomi Falkenberg (Sutton, MA) and Noemi Howland (South Pasadena, CA) totaled six saves and seven different student-athletes were credited with a shot for the Pioneers. As a team, Smith was awarded eight of the 11 corner kicks in the contest.
Both Beauton and Kristen McCrea (Weymouth, MA) took five shots and combined for five on-goal for WPI who held an 18-7 margin overall and 9-5 on-net.
The Engineers will be busy with exams this week and return to the pitch for a 1pm home game versus Emerson on Saturday. In a scheduling oddity, Smith heads to Emerson on Tuesday for a 6pm start.
