WORCESTER – Leah Beauton (Colchester, CT) used her ninth and 10th goals of the season to lift WPI past visiting Fitchburg State, 2-0, in a non-conference women's soccer contest Tuesday afternoon in Alumni Stadium. Despite yielding the pair of tallies, Falcon goalkeeper Sarah Hemmings (Eastham, MA) tied her career-high for saves with 21 on the day.
Beauton initially struck off a feed from Sofia Orrico (Bethel, CT) in the 20th minute. She added another after carrying the ball down the field before firing in the 54th minute.
The Engineer offense took 48 shots to the visitors three, of which 23 were on-goal for the hosts. FSU's Elizabeth Read (Lowell, MA) accounted for all three of the team's shots, including the one on net.
Orrico, Lilly Proulx (New Boston, NH) and Kristen McCrea (Weymouth, MA) were responsible for seven shots each with a total of nine on-goal. Corner kicks were tilted 12-1 in favor of WPI. Mandy St. Germain (Worcester, MA) stopped one shot in the first half while Lauren Francis (Natick, MA) went untested in the second.
Both teams return to the pitch for conference matches on Saturday at 2pm. The Engineers (11-3) head to Mount Holyoke and Fitchburg State (5-9) entertains Worcester State.
