Cambridge, MA --- A goal by senior captain Sophia Struckman (Scottsdale, AZ) was the difference as the No. 6 MIT women's soccer team edged NEWMAC rival WPI by a 1-0 final in Cambridge.
The victory secured the outright NEWMAC regular season title for MIT for the fifth time in six years and the Engineers will look to become the first team in the conference since Wheaton College in 2007 (9-0) to complete a perfect regular season on Saturday.
The hosts picked up its first win over WPI since 2015 as Worcester's Engineers claimed a victory in both the regular season and in the NEWMAC Tournament championship game.
Struckman registered her sixth goal of the season as she finished a cross from the right side by classmate Allie Werner (Tyler, TX) at 12:11.
MIT nearly scored its second goal of the game in the 37th minute as first-year Emma Rutherford (Nashville, TN) lined a shot to the top left corner of the net, but it was headed away by a WPI defender and out of play.
-WPI put two shots on net, one in the 51st minute by Kristen McCrea (Weymouth, MA) and one in the 72nd minute by Lauren Kaija (), but both were saved by MIT keeper Ava Gillikin (Flemington, NJ) as Cambridge's Engineers picked up their 16th shutout of the season.
Gillikin registered her seventh solo shutout of the season with a pair of saves for MIT, while WPI keeper Mandy St. Germain (Upton, MA) (13-4-1) made 11 saves for WPI over the 90-minute match.
MIT outshot WPI by a 20-6 margin and held a 9-2 advantage in corner kicks.
Both teams close out the NEWMAC regular season on the road at 1pm on Saturday. WPI heads out to Western Mass to take on Springfield while MIT crosses the Charles River to face Emerson. At the conclusion of the day, the NEWMAC will release seeding and a complete schedule for the postseason tournament. WPI is secured a top six seed and can finish anywhere from second to sixth. As the number one seed, MIT will receive a first round bye and will host a semifinal match on Thursday, November 7 at a time to be determined later.
