• WPI Breaks Ground for a Stunning – and Sustainable – Sports and Recreation Center

    WPI President Dennis Berkey and members of the WPI Board of Trustees, along with the Moonraker 2.0 robot, broke ground today for a 145,000-square-foot sports and recreation center. The new center will be built into the hillside at the west end of the WPI Quadrangle and is designed to meet LEED certification standards. The facility is scheduled to open in August 2012.

    Babson Park, MA --- The 2009 NEWMAC All-Academic Volleyball Team was announced Wednesday and includes senior Becca Holmberg. This marked the third straight year Holmberg achieved this mark. She was also honored earlier this fall with her second straight selection to the first team of the ESPN The Magazine Academic All-District I team.

    Worcester, MA --- For the second straight year, WPI outside hitter Becca Holmberg has been named to the ESPN The Magazine Academic All-District I first team by the College Sports Information Directors of America (Co-SIDA). The senior joins five other honorees in the College Division, which is comprised of NCAA Division II and III and NAIA programs in New England, New York and Eastern Canada. By being named first team, Holmberg advances to the national ballot.

    Wellesley, MA --- Wellesley volleyball advanced to the NEWMAC semifinals with a 3-0 win over WPI this evening at Keohane Sports Center. The Engineers close out their season at 22-8. The 22 wins are the fourth most in program history and the highest in 21 years. Wellesley, 21-9 overall, will face Springfield in the NEWMAC semifinals at 7:30 Friday evening at MIT.

With the win, the Engineers earn the final spot in the NEWMAC Tournament, qualifying for the postseason for the first time since 2005.

Belinda Nwagbara, Bailey Sarber, and Elyssa Dorenfeld each added four kills. Kim Woodward handed out 18 assists and Joan Porambo recorded eight digs on the evening.

    Quincy, MA --- Belinda Nwagbara had a team-high 14 kills over two matches, helping the WPI women's volleyball team to a pair of victories in a non-conference tri-match on Saturday at Eastern Nazarene. The Engineers defeated the hosts in the opener 3-0 before taking another 3-0 sweep over Husson. The Engineers now stand at 20-6 on the season, marking only the fifth time that the team has reached the 20-win plateau.

The Engineers' 17 victories are the program's second most since 1988.

The Engineers totaled four kills and did not make an error on 13 attempts in the decisive set.

    Worcester, MA --- Led by MVP Bailey Sarber, the WPI Women's Volleyball team extended its school-record start with a pair of victories to claim the program’s sixth Worcester City Tournament championship on Saturday at Clark University. The Engineers improved to 10-0 following a 3-1 win over Assumption and a 3-0 win over NEWMAC rival Clark in the championship. Sarber was dominant, with 31 kills and 28 digs over the two games.
