Porambo Hits 1,000 Dig Milestone as WPI Sweeps Tri-Match

Worcester, MA ---  WPI junior Joan Porambo (Jim Thorpe, PA) registered her 1,000th career dig as the host Engineers defeated Mass Maritime and Pine Manor in straight sets in non-conference action on Saturday.  The middle match saw Pine Manor down Mass Maritime in three sets.  With the results, WPI improves to 15-2, while Pine Manor moves to 5-6 and Mass Maritime dips to 1-15.

Sophomore Belinda Nwagbara (Santa Rosa, CA) notched four kills for the Engineers and recorded a .375 hitting percentage in the 3-0 win over Mass Maritime by scores of 25-8, 25-10, and 25-10 in the morning match.  Freshman Sarah Cook (New Paltz, NY) pitched in four kills and added a dig.  Sophomore Alex Rangel (Weston, FL) and Junior Kim Woodward (Clifton Park, NY) combined for eleven assists, six and five, respectively.

For the Buccaneers, Allison Condino (Fitchburg, MA) recorded five assists, while Joanne Robery (Plainville, MA) added another five.  Victoria Presutti (Marshfield, MA) amassed five digs, notched three kills and registered an ace.  

Pine Manor freshman Megan Patch (Bethpage, TN) paced all players on the day notching a triple-double to defeat Mass Maritime (25-20, 25-16, 25-13) in the second match of the day.  Patch doled out 16 assists, 13 digs and 10 aces.  Junior Jennifer Gross (Coral Springs, FL) dug out 10 balls, made six kills and served six aces.  Alie Johnston (Winnipeg, MB) made 13 kills and chipped in eight digs.  Freshman Ashley Carusone (Nashua, NH) amassed 13 digs, while Aponi Washington (Brockton, MA) made two blocks.

Condino handed out 16 assists for the Buccaneers.  Presutti killed six attacks and dug out five.  Laura Basile (Cambridge MA) had four kills and four digs.  Suzanne Marino (Kings Park, NY) blocked two attacks.

In the final match of the day, WPI's Nwagbara amassed nine kills and six digs, while Lauren D'Angelo (Wallingford, CT) came up with seven digs in the 3-0 win over Pine Manor (25-12, 25-11, 25-15).  Woodward setup 18 assists and had four digs. 

For Pine Manor, Patch and Gross amassed double-doubles.  Patch collected 17 assists and 22 digs, while Gross notched 13 kills, 14 digs, and two blocks.  Carusone dug out 17 and Johnston added 11 for the Gators.

WPI returns to the court on Tuesday when they host Coast Guard in a key NEWMAC matchup at 7pm.  Pine Manor hosts Becker on Thursday as they kickoff a four-match homestand at 7pm.  Mass Maritime travels to Westfield State on Tuesday for a 7pm MASCAC tilt.
