Worcester, MA --- Springfield senior Sarah Lang-Rodean (Mansfield Center, CT) notched a match-best nine kills to lead the Pride past host WPI 3-0 in a key NEWMAC volleyball contest Tuesday night at Harrington Auditorium. Springfield, who never trailed in the match, won by scores of 25-16, 25-11, 25-6.
With the win, Springfield improves to 24-2 overall and 7-0 in conference play, while WPI moves to 19-6 and 4-3 in NEWMAC action. Despite the loss, the Engineers secured a berth in the upcoming six-team NEWMAC Tournament based on other results Tuesday around the conference. The Engineers are currently in fifth place in the 10-team loop.
Lang-Rodean committed just one error in 19 attempts en route to posting a .421 hitting percentage. Juniors Lauren Torvi (North Smithfield, RI) and Kim Giaquinto (Massapequa, NY) added eight and six kills respectively while junior Meaghan Hart (Stony Brook, NY) and sophomore Cassie Seymour (Sebastopol, CA) combined for 25 digs. Senior Kelsea Hellyar (Fairhaven, MA) chipped in with 33 assists for the Pride.
Sophomore Elyssa Dorenfeld (Reading, MA) paced the Engineers with eight kills and five digs. Junior Kim Woodward (Clifton Park, NY) amassed 15 assists, while classmate Joan Porambo (Jim Thorpe, PA) recorded 13 digs for the Crimson and Gray.
Both squads turn their attention to this weekend's Hall of Fame Invitational. WPI begins Silver Bracket play at Mount Holyoke on Friday at 5pm versus Gordon while Springfield starts Gold Bracket action on the same day at Smith at 7pm against Bowdoin.
