South Hadley, MA --- Elyssa Dorenfeld (Reading, MA) led WPI with team-highs of eight kills and nine digs as the Engineers downed Gordon 3-0 in the opening round at the prestigious Hall of Fame Tournament held on the campus of Mount Holyoke on Friday evening. WPI took the match by scores of 25-22, 25-20 and 25-19.
The victory improves WPI to 20-6 on the year and marks just the second time in school history - and the first time in 22 years - the program has posted back-to-back 20-win seasons. Gordon is now 6-20.
Kerrin Beovich (Seaford, NY) chipped in with seven kills, while Alyssa Fidanza (Ellington, CT) pitched in with six. Joan Porambo (Jim Thorpe, PA) and Lauren D'Angelo (Wallingford, CT) teamed up for 15 digs in the match. Kim Woodward (Clifton Park, NY) recorded 25 assists for the Crimson and Gray.
The 16-team double-bracket tournament features the best teams in New England. This year's field has seven NEWMAC teams, four NESCAC, two MASCAC, and one member each of the Commonwealth Coast Conference, Liberty League, and the University Athletic Association. Joining WPI and Gordon in the Silver Bracket are Westfield State, Smith, Bridgewater State, Wheaton, Union and Mount Holyoke.
WPI returns to the court at noon on Saturday to face Union in a Silver Bracket semifinal. The Dutchwomen defeated Mount Holyoke 3-0. The Engineers will then play at 4pm against an opponent to be announced. Gordon faces Mount Holyoke at 10am. All Silver Bracket matches on Saturday are at Mount Holyoke.
