Worcester, MA --- Trinity Leonard (Mill Valley, CA) smashed nine kills and added a pair of blocks to pace visiting MIT to a 3-0 victory over WPI in a NEWMAC volleyball matchup on Tuesday evening. MIT took the contest by scores of 25-12, 25-17, 25-21.
The win was a milestone result for MIT head coach Paul Dill. Already the winningest coach in program history, the 15th-year coach now has 400 victories for the Engineers.
MIT sees its record move to 19-12 on the year and 6-2 in conference action. WPI dips to 21-8 overall and 4-4 in NEWMAC play.
The visitors never trailed in the first two sets, rattling off the final five points of the opening stanza and collecting the first eight points of the second set to open the decisive 2-0 lead before intermission. WPI took initial control of the third set, jumping out to a 6-1 advantage only to see MIT use a 12-3 spurt midway through the frame to seize the lead for good.
Kelly Schulte (Riverside, CA) aided the MIT effort eight kills and two blocks. Katie Spielbauer (Lakeview, MI) led all players with 14 digs while Sharon Hao (San Jose, CA) and Alyssa Rothman (Plainview, NY) doled out 18 and 9 assists respectively.
Bailey Sarber (Westerly, RI) led the WPI attack with seven kills while Elyssa Dorenfeld (Reading, MA) chipped in with five and Kerrin Beovich (Seaford, NY) added four. Kim Woodward (Clifton Park, NY) dished out a game-best 17 assists while Alyssa Fidanza (Ellington, CT) contributed 10 digs and two services aces and Lauren D'Angelo (Wallingford, CT) launched three aces.
Both teams close out regular season play on Saturday. WPI travels to Smith for a 1pm contest while MIT hosts Coast Guard in a tri-match that features Johnson & Wales beginning at 11am.
