Northampton, MA --- Kim Woodward (Clifton Park, NY) and Elyssa Dorenfeld (Reading, MA) each notched a double-double as WPI defeated Smith in five sets on Saturday afternoon in NEWMAC volleyball action. With the win, WPI finishes the regular season 22-8 and 5-4 in the conference, while Smith finishes its season 3-21 and 1-8 in the NEWMAC.
The result marks the first time WPI has defeated Smith since November, 4, 1987. Smith had previously won all 22 matches in NEWMAC regular season play, and a total of 24 including conference tournament contests.
Woodward doled out 36 assists and registered 10 digs, while Dorenfeld recorded 12 kills and 16 digs for the Engineers. Bailey Sarber (Westerly, RI) and Belinda Nwagbara (Santa Rosa, CA) notched double-digit kills, with 16 and 10, respectively. Joan Porambo (Jim Thorpe, PA)pitched in with 28 digs, as Alyssa Fidanza (Ellington, CT) contributed 13 and Lauren D'Angelo (Wallingford, CT) recorded 11.
Laurel Belton (San Bernadino, CA) led the way for the Pioneers with 17 kills, hitting .245 for the match, while adding a pair of service aces and 23 digs. Lauren Martinez (Phoenix, AZ) served up three service aces, while tossing in 21 assists and 18 digs. Courtney Faria (Pocasset, MA) had 21 assists as well.
Smith took game one 25-23, and the Engineers took set two and three 25-12 and 25-18, respectively. Smith won in the fourth set 25-13, the Pioneers and Engineers went back and forth in a fifth set that WPI took 15-13.
WPI begins the NEWMAC tournament with a trip to MIT for a quarterfinal matchup on Tuesday at 7pm. The contest is just a week after the Cambridge Engineers defeated the Worcester Engineers 3-0 (25-12, 25-17, 25-21) in Harrington Auditorium.
