WORCESTER -- Melissa Daigle (Norfolk, MA) and Casey Hunt (Granby, CT) shared team-best honors with nine kills each as host WPI snapped Newbury's six-game winning streak with a 3-0 victory on Tuesday evening. The Engineers swept the match by scores of 25-20, 25-17, 25-15.
Junior middle hitter Courtney Banks (Corona, Calif.) posted a .312 attack percentage leading the way for the Nighthawks with 12 kills on 32 attempts with just three miscues.
The visitors came out strong in the first set. Banks and sophomore outside hitters Lina Miranda (Brockton, MA) and Maya Umoren (Quincy, MA) were dominant at the net recording two blocks assists. But the Engineers were a scrappy team and scrapped their way back to take a 23-14 lead late in the set.
On the brink of dropping the first set trailing, 23-17, the Nighthawks responded with a 6-1 run sparked by three straight kills by Banks but it was not enough as the Engineers went on to edge out the Nighthawks, 25-20 and swing momentum over to the WPI bench in the process.
WPI took a two-set lead with a decisive, 25-17 victory in the second set. Daigle and Hunt each posted three kills.
The Engineers sealed the match with a 25-15 win in the third set.
