WORCESTER – Junior Abby Bertics (La Jolla, CA) and senior Alli Davanzo (Saint Johns, FL) hit .424 and .429, respectively, as MIT defeated WPI 3-0 (25-15, 25-21, 25-15) Saturday in the NEWMAC Women's Volleyball season finale in Harrington Auditorium.
No. 22 MIT improves to 26-2 and claims the NEWMAC regular season crown, and top seed in the upcoming NEWMAC Women's Volleyball Championship, with a 10-0 conference ledger. WPI concludes its season 11-17 and 1-9. The NEWMAC Women's Volleyball Championship field and seedings will be released sometime this afternoon/evening.
Bertics led all players with 15 kills followed by Davanzo with 10. Freshman Andie Maloney (Manhattan Beach, CA) accounted for 42 of 45 assists while senior Clare Farley (La Jolla, CA) paced the match with 15 digs. Junior Carly Silvernale (Bellevue, WA) chipped in with a dozen digs and sophomore Madison Lee (Hillsborough, CA) added 11. Davanzo also registered five block assists as junior Carly Staub (Palos Verdes Estates, CA) and sophomore Shea Landeene (Phoenix, AZ) each stonewalled four block assists.
The high-energy match was close in the first set until MIT went on an 8-0 run to pull away. Trailing 23-14 in the second set, WPI embarked on a 7-1 run and fended off four set points before Landeene swung the door shut off a helper from Maloney. The Crimson and Gray kept the third relatively close until the guests built a seven-point lead following an ace by Lee.
Prior to the match, Kaczowka, Melissa Daigle (Norfolk, MA), Kat Hurlock (Burlington, CT), Brooke Klepper (Miami Beach, FL) and Kelly Rathje (Scituate, MA) were honored for their contributions to the WPI volleyball program.
MIT hit .238 or above in the three sets and was .264 for the match.
