WORCESTER – Juniors Colleen Mullins (Andover, MA), Abbie Gilbert (Hopkinton, MA) and Kassidy Utheim (Monroe Township, NJ) keyed a late third-set rally as the WPI women's volleyball team defeated Wentworth Institute of Technology, 3-0 (25-20, 25-21, 26-24), Tuesday night in the Sports & Recreation Center.
Trailing 24-22, Mullins' swipe forced a Leopard timeout before Gilbert and Utheim's block evened the set. Utheim then notched a solo block for the lead and Gilbert ended it with a kill.
The Engineers (4-0) never trailed and were up by as much as six in the opening set. The remaining stanzas were much closer with Wentworth (2-1) leading much of the second and, with the exception of 14-13, a majority of the third before the hosts rallied to secure the straight-set triumph.
Sophomore Sarah Kwatinetz (Seattle, WA) amassed a team-best 11 kills and three aces to lead WPI while Gilbert and senior Casey Hunt (Granby, CT) totaled 13 swipes. Freshman Lilly Taylor (Weymouth, MA), who served the last four points, handed out 32 of the Boynton Hillers' 34 assists. Senior Victoria Nassar (Atkinson, NH) tallied a match-best 21 digs to go with 10 each from Mullins and Hunt. Utheim finished with three solo blocks and three block assists.
Wentworth junior Leah Rogoz (Woodridge, IL) posted a double-double of 14 kills and 14 digs while classmate Claire Quick (Mission Viejo, CA) also turned in a double-double with 11 swipes and 15 digs. Junior Maddy Tomastik (Portland, OR) and classmate Katie Clouse (Hudson Falls, NY) each doled out 17 helpers. Junior Lexie Cambray (Bedford, NH) pitched in with 15 digs.
WPI hosts Southern Maine and Fitchburg State in a tri-match Saturday beginning at 11am. The Leopards entertain Simmons at 7pm Thursday.
