Northampton, MA --- Junior Colleen Mullins (Andover, MA) narrowly missed a double-double with 14 kills and nine digs as the WPI women's volleyball team went on the road to collect its first NEWMAC win of the season, a 3-0 (25-19, 25-10, 25-14) triumph over host Smith, Tuesday night inside Ainsworth Gymnasium.
Junior Abbie Gilbert (Hopkinton, MA) and sophomore Sarah Kwatinetz (Seattle, WA) each smashed six kills while Gilbert and classmate Kassidy Utheim (Monroe Township, NJ) combined for nine block assists. Senior Azita Bakhtyari (Andover, MA) handed out 30 assists and classmate Victoria Nassar (Atkinson, NH) posted a match-best 21 digs. Mullins also served up three aces.
Sophomore Caleigh Johnson (Georgetown, TX) led the Pioneers offensive attack finishing with 11 kills and two blocks. Junior Kimani Freeman (Newark, NJ), who returned from a four-game absence due to injury, registered 14 assists. First-year Anna Lynch (Lenox, MA) added seven digs for the hosts.
WPI (9-2, 1-2 NEWMAC) heads to Wellesley Saturday for a 1pm match while Smith (1-9, 0-2) hosts Babson at 11am and Keene State at 1pm.
