Weston, MA --- WPI defeated Regis, 3-1 (25-6, 25-10, 17-25, 25-20), and Worcester State, 3-0 (25-15, 25-15, 25-19), in a non-conference volleyball trimatch Saturday.
WPI improves to 16-3 while Regis is 8-9 and Worcester State is 10-7 following their respective matches.
Senior Azita Bakhtyari (Andover, MA) narrowly missed a double-double with 26 assists and nine digs in the opener vs Regis. Junior Abbie Gilbert (Hopkinton, MA) registered a match-best nine kills and freshman Lilly Taylor (Weymouth, MA) chipped in with 11 assists. Senior Victoria Nassar (Atkinson, NH) recorded a match-high 17 digs and junior Colleen Mullins (Andover, MA) pitched in with 10. Mullins and Nassar also served up three aces apiece.
Junior Katryna Veasey (Quincy, MA) led Regis with 11 digs and sophomore Tori Ondris (Mineola, NY) handed out 10 helpers. Junior Lauren Butt (Topsfield, MA) totaled six blocks, including five block assists.
Sophomore Sarah Kwatinetz (Seattle, WA) led all student-athletes with seven kills and six block assists as the Engineers defeated their cross town rivals for the second time this season. Bakhtyari handed out 24 assists and Nassar totaled 15 digs. Both Mullins and senior Casey Hunt (Granby, CT) registered nine digs each.
Worcester State senior Allie Nolan (Melrose, MA) doled out 15 helpers and classmate Megan Leavens (Storrs, CT) logged 11 of the Lancers 33 digs.
WPI travels to Plattsburgh, NY for the two-day Cardinal Quad. The Engineers open with Gordon Friday at 8pm before taking on the hosts at noon and St. Lawrence at 2:30pm on Saturday. Regis hosts Brandeis Tuesday at 6pm and Worcester State is at Salem State at 7pm.
