Plattsburgh, NY --- Sophomore Sarah Kwatinetz (Seattle, WA) tallied a match-best 12 kills and the WPI volleyball team hit .230 or better, including a .360 convincing fourth set, as the Engineers defeated Gordon, 3-1 (25-19, 22-25, 25-20, 25-14), Friday night at Plattsburgh State's Cardinal Quad.
The Crimson and Gray win their eighth-consecutive match and improve to 17-3 while the Fighting Scots slip to 11-10.
WPI was .300 in the opening set and Gordon was .500 in the second. The Boynton Hillers took a close third set and finished off the night with an 11-point victory in the fourth.
Senior Casey Hunt (Granby, CT), junior Abbie Gilbert (Hopkinton, MA) and sophomore Amanda Wetmore (Hudson, NH) all registered eight kills while junior Colleen Mullins (Andover, MA) added seven to go with nine digs and an eye-popping seven aces. Senior Azita Bakhtyari (Andover, MA) matched Gordon's assist total with 39 of 43 WPI helpers. Senior Victoria Nassar (Atkinson, NH) paced all student-athletes with 18 digs followed by Mullins (9) and Bakhtyari and Hunt with seven apiece. Kwatinetz also totaled a trio of block assists in the effort.
Gordon senior Mackenzie Hinds (Higganum, CT) recorded 11 kills while junior Amanda Snyder (San Jose, CA) amassed nine. Sophomore Ashlyn Gergins (Murrieta, CA) doled out 30 of 39 assists while junior Jenny Curtiss (Larkspur, CO) led the team with 17 digs and three aces. Both hinds and freshman Marla Batson (Windham, NH) were each credited with three block assists.
The Engineers begin with Plattsburgh State and Gordon opens with St. Lawrence at noon tomorrow. The matchups are reversed for the 2:30 contests.
