Plattsburgh, NY --- The WPI volleyball team bested host Plattsburgh State, 3-0 (25-21, 25-17, 25-23), and were upended by St. Lawrence, 3-0 (26-24, 25-20, 25-18), Saturday afternoon on the final day of the Cardinal Quad in Memorial Hall.
The Engineers complete the weekend with an 18-4 ledger while the hosts slip to 6-17 and the Saints improve to 17-7 following their matches versus the Crimson and Gray.
In the noon match versus the Cardinals, senior Casey Hunt (Granby, CT) narrowly missed a double-double with nine kills and eight digs. Junior Colleen Mullins (Andover, MA) chipped in with seven swipes, four aces and three digs. Senior Victoria Nassar (Atkinson, NH) accounted for 19 digs and classmate Azita Bakhtyari (Andover, MA) doled out 23 assists for WPI.
Sophomore Michelle Simmons (Riverside, CA) and freshman Ann Beauchamp (Potsdam, NY) each tallied seven kills for the home team. Rookie Lauren DeVoe (Wayne, NJ) accumulated 21 assists and sophomore Maddy Zophy (Clifton Park, NY) totaled 13 digs. Freshman Tara McGovern (Holbrook, NY) amassed seven blocks, including six block assists.
The finale versus the Saints saw Nassar add 12 more digs and Bakhtyari add 19 helpers to their season totals. Hunt had 10 digs and sophomore Sarah Kwatinetz (Seattle, WA) led the attack with seven kills, followed by sophomore Amanda Wetmore (Hudson, NH) with six. Defensively, Kwatinetz was in on seven blocks to go with five from Bakhtyari and four from junior Abbie Gilbert (Hopkinton, MA).
Senior Grace Kelly (West Chazy, NY) turned in a match-best 12 kills and rookie Natalie Piper (Kailua, HI) added eight kills, 11 digs and four aces for St. Lawrence. Freshman Reagan Collier-Hogan (Fort Edward, NY) registered 15 digs as junior Jenna Britton (New Woodstock, NY) and senior Ally Good (Seaford, NY) logged 20 and 18 assists, respectively. Junior Vivian Susko (Hudson, NH) also served up four aces as classmates Marissa Parker (Marilla, NY) and Amanda Teppo (Queensbury, NY) each recorded four block assists for the victors.
WPI is at Wheaton Tuesday for a 7pm first serve. Plattsburgh State takes on host SUNY Geneseo Friday at 5pm and St. Lawrence also returns to action Friday with a home match versus Skidmore at 7pm.
