WORCESTER – Senior Azita Bakhtyari (Andover, MA) and junior Colleen Mullins (Andover, MA) each registered a double-double and sophomore Amanda Wetmore (Hudson, NH) hit .522 with a match-best 13 kills as the WPI women's volleyball defeated city and NEWMAC rival Clark, 3-0 (25-22, 25-13, 25-13), Tuesday night in Harrington Auditorium.
The Engineers end the night 21-6 overall and 6-3 in conference contests and the Cougars dip to 12-13 and 2-7. While both teams went 2-0 at the city tournament earlier in the season, the teams did not meet due to this year's format.
Bakhtyari delivered 32 assists and 14 digs and Mullins was the only other student-athlete to notch double-digit kills with 10 to go along with 18 digs. Sophomore Sarah Kwatinetz (Seattle, WA) chipped in with nine swipes. Senior Victoria Nassar (Atkinson, NH) paced the Engineers with 15 digs and classmate Casey Hunt (Granby, CT) followed with 14.
Senior Ana Patricia Mercado (Guaynabo, Puerto Rico) narrowly missed a double-double for Clark with 16 digs and a team-best eight kills. Classmate Rachel Webb (Celina, TX) handed off 23 of 24 assists and fellow senior Rayme Quiban (Seattle, WA) logged a match-high 22 digs.
After a first set that featured four ties and a pair of lead changes, WPI claimed the next two sets for the straight-set victory.
Prior to the match the seniors from both teams were recognized for their contributions to their respective programs.
The Engineers travel to nationally-ranked MIT Saturday for the 1pm regular season finale and Clark hosts Smith at the same time.
