WORCESTER -- Junior Colleen Mullins (Andover, MA) delivered a match-high 12 kills, including the clinching swipe, to go with 11 digs as the WPI women's volleyball team bested Coast Guard, 3-1 (25-15, 25-17, 21-25, 25-21), Tuesday night inside Harrington Auditorium.
After WPI took the first two sets in convincing fashion, Coast Guard rallied from a 16-7 deficit to force the fourth. WPI had a healthy lead once again only to see a 16-10 advantage whittled down to 17-15 following a timeout. The guests later prolonged the match thanks to a kill by freshman Destiny Johnson (Tampa, FL).
Senior Casey Hunt (Granby, CT), junior Abbie Gilbert (Hopkinton, MA), and sophomores Sarah Kwatinetz (Seattle, WA) and Amanda Wetmore (Hudson, NH) all registered seven kills. Hunt also registered 16 digs and Kwatinetz was in on five block assists. Senior Azita Bakhtyari (Andover, MA) handed out 38 of 41 assists and classmate Victoria Nassar (Atkinson, NH) delivered 14 digs. Sophomore Kate Amrein (Nashua, NH) chipped in with six digs and three aces.
Junior Angelou Dunton (Seattle, WA), freshman Amanda Drake (Victor, NY) and classmate Mary Sweet (Chardon, OH) each amassed nine kills for the Bears. Junior Makenna Martin (Granbury, TX) and freshman Nikki Sefcik (Arvado, CA) combined for 43 assists as sophomore Veronica Hine (Virginia Beach, VA) paced all student-athletes with 23 digs. Dunton (20) and Drake (16) also recorded double-digit digs. Freshman Maddie James (Rockwall, TX) posted one block and three block assists. Sefcik also served up three aces for Coast Guard.
