Volleyball Splits With Worcester State and Endicott to Begin 2019 Campaign

WORCESTER – Amanda Gilbert (Hopkinton, MA) paced Endicott with team-bests of 14 kills versus host WPI and 11 opposite Worcester State as the Gulls went 2-0 Saturday in a tri-match in the WPI Sports & Recreation Center. The Engineers were led by Colleen Mullins (Andover, MA) and Amanda Wetmore (Hudson, NH) with 14 and 15 kills, respectively, versus the Lancers and Gulls. Natalie Gillis (Ashland, MA), meanwhile, totaled 14 kills for the two-time defending MASCAC champions.

WPI and Endicott began their respective days with straight-set victories over Worcester State by counts of 25-20, 25-20, 25-18 and 25-13, 25-19, 25-20. The final match of the day saw the Gulls rebound from a 25-15 first set to take the match 26-24, 25-17, 25-13.

Bolstered by Mullins' 14 kills – including seven in the third – and a .480 hitting percentage, the Engineers eclipsed .200 in the eye-opener. Mullins also accounted for seven digs and two aces. Catherine Reynolds (Concord, NH) debuted with a double-double consisting of 26 assists and 10 digs. Wetmore added nine kills and two service aces to go with nine digs from Abbie Gilbert (Hopkinton, MA). Sarah Kwatinetz (Seattle, WA) contributed with six swings, as well as, two blocks and a block assist.

The Lancers saw Katie Gagnon (Hampden, MA) accumulate 16 of the team's 18 assists and come up with five digs. Leelle Tyler (Longmeadow, MA) and Gillis each smashed a half dozen kills with the latter also digging out seven balls. Brooke Lamothe (Tewskbury, MA) totaled six digs while Marissa Proia (Framingham, MA) served up a pair of aces to go with a block and a block assist.

Endicott def. WSU

The Gulls hit .312 or better in the first two sets before going .211 in the third. Amanda Gilbert (Hopkinton, MA) was joined in the multiple kill column by Remi Quesnelle (Sunderland, MA) with 10. Quesnelle also chipped in with six digs. Zoey Gifford (Natick, MA) posted a double-double of 35 assists and 12 digs. Mackenzie Kennedy (Andover, MA) came up with 16 digs as Lauren McGrath (Franklin, MA) pitched in with seven. Nicole Winkler (Southboro, MA) amassed eight kills and a pair of block assists.

Sarah Ward (Townsend, MA) registered 20 assists as Lamothe and Gillis totaled 27 digs in the middle match. Gillis also recorded eight kills for the Lancers. Stephanie Chapin (Hampden, MA) followed with seven swipes and two block assists, and Proia logged three aces.

Amanda Gilbert was joined in double-digit kills this time by Winkler and Colleen McAvoy (Coventry, CT) with 12 and 11, respectively. Gifford tacked on 48 more assists to her total. Kennedy accumulated 20 digs as McGrath followed with 14.

Wetmore notched 15 kills, the most in a single match on the day, while Reynolds handed out 31 more assists. Suela Miloshi (Needham, MA) served up four aces and came up with 13 digs. Kayleigh Campbell (Wilbraham, MA) added 16 assists and Kwatinetz was in on three block assists.

WPI hits the road Wednesday for a 7pm match at Gordon while Endicott entertains MIT, who is receiving votes in the AVCA Top 25, and Worcester State hosts Rhode Island College at 7pm on Tuesday.
