WORCESTER -- Colleen Mullins (Andover, MA) hit a blistering .533 and Catherine Reynolds (Concord, MA) doled out a match-best 24 assists as WPI defeated visiting Elms 3-0 in a non-conference volleyball match played on Tuesday evening inside Harrington Auditorium. The hosts took the match by set scores of 25-11, 25-22 and 25-24.
The Engineers are now 4-2 on the season while the Blazers dip to 3-4 overall.
After a back-and-forth start to set one that saw the two teams tied 3-3, WPI rattled off 21 of the next 25 points to take a commanding 24-7 advantage. The Engineers hit a jaw-dropping .458, registering 11 kills and not making an error in 24 attacks.
Down 18-15 in the middle set, the Crimson and Gray used a 10-4 spurt to take a 2-0 set advantage. Mullins talled her second straight set with four kills and no errors.
In set three, the hosts netted the opening four points and never trailed en route to their first 3-0 victory since the opening match of the season.
Mullins finished with eight kills in 15 attempts and was joined with no errors by fellow co-captain Abbie Gilbert (Hopkinton, MA) and Sarah Kwatinetz (Seattle, WA), who each smacked five kills. Amanda Wetmore (Hudson, NH) added six kills and led all players with five aces, including four in the third set. Kwatinetz had her hand in five block assists and Mullins posted a team-best seven digs.
Alanys Cruz (Humacao, Puerto Rico) was outstanding for the Blazers, hitting .500 with 11 kills and just error in 20 attempts. She stuffed the stat sheets with five digs and a block assist. Natalia Caraballo (Arlington, TX) chipped in with eight kills and Dakata Stewart (Victoria, TX) narrowly missed a double-double with team-bests in assists (20) and digs (9).
WPI heads to Boston Saturday for a tri-match with host Wentworth (11am) and Keene State (1pm). Elms is back in action Thursday, heading to Hartford, CT to face St. Joseph at 7pm.
