Babson Park, MA --- Allie Puccio (New Hartford, NY) led host Babson with 14 kills as the Beavers defeated WPI 3-0 (25-13, 26-24, 25-21) in the NEWMAC women's volleyball opener for both teams Tuesday night in Staake Gymnasium.
With the win, the 21st-ranked team in Division III by the AVCA improves to 8-0 while the Engineers move to 4-5 on the season.
Jordan Lapins (Calgary, Alberta) also had double-digit kills for Babson with 10 to go with three total blocks. Elizabeth Cameron (El Dorado Hills, CA) amassed 27 assists, seven kills and four service aces. Maddie Malee (Orlando, FL) led a balanced defense with 11 digs. Both Lapins and Cameron hit at least .545 for the match.
WPI was led by Sarah Kwatinetz (Seattle, WA) with six kills and a .429 hitting percentage, followed by Abbie Gilbert (Hopkinton, MA) and Suela Miloshi (Needham, MA) with five each. Gilbert and Miloshi teamed up to serve up five aces for the Engineers. Catherine Reynolds (Concord, NH) handed out 18 assists and came up with a dozen digs.
Bolstered by a .600 in the first and .325 in the second, Babson hit at a .295 clip. The Engineers, meanwhile, were held to .125 on the night.
After dropping the first set, the Crimson and Gray sprinted out to a 3-0 advantage in the second and did not yield the lead until Lauren Zuloaga's (Naples, FL) kill gave Babson the 25-24 edge. Cameron then closed it out with a swipe.
WPI faces another tough NEWMAC test Saturday when it heads to Springfield for a 1pm first serve. Babson heads to Simmons for a 7pm non-conference match on Thursday.
