Maddie Sanborn

Springfield, MA --- Amanda Wetmore (Hudson, NH) tallied 15 kills and five service aces as WPI defeated Springfield, 3-1, Saturday in a NEWMAC volleyball clash inside Blake Arena. It was the Engineers (5-5) first win over the Pride (9-4) since a 3-0 decision on October 23, 2012.

After dropping the initial set 25-9, the Crimson and Gray rebounded with set scores of 25-21, 25-23 and 27-25. The contest appeared to be headed to a fifth set as late as 22-19 but a pair of swipes by Wetmore and another by Maddie Sanborn (Londonderry, NH) helped swing the scoreboard back in the Engineers favor. A Springfield miscue sealed the victory for the guests.

Colleen Mullins (Andover, MA) and Sarah Kwatinetz (Seattle, WA) totaled 17 kills for the Engineers to go with six from Sanborn, who also served up a pair of aces. Catherine Reynolds (Concord, NH) handed out 36 of the team's 42 assists and led the squad with 18 digs. Abbie Gilbert (Hopkinton, MA) was second with 15 digs, followed by Mullins and Jenna Galli (Cold Spring Harbor, NY) with 11 each.

Springfield was led by Camryn Bancroft (Eastport, NY) with 16 kills while Demi Spanos (West Harrison, NY) chipped in with a dozen. Sara Labadorf's (Huntersville, NC) double-double consisted of 34 assists and 14 digs. Anagabrielle Sanchez (Caguas, Puerto Rico) came up with 21 digs and Ashley Tanner (Manorville, NY) added 16 to go with six of the Pride's 15 service aces.

Despite a non-existent hitting percentage by the visitors in the first set, the teams were separated by .003 with the advantage going to Springfield (.229-.226).

Both teams are home for 7pm matches on Tuesday as WPI welcomes Smith and Springfield hosts Clark.
