Middles Come up Huge as Volleyball Sweeps Smith in NEWMAC Affair

WORCESTER -- Middle hitters Sarah Kwatinetz (Seattle, WA) and Amanda Wetmore (Hudson, NH) combined for 15 kills and a hitting percentage of .387 as host WPI defeated Smith 3-0 in a NEWMAC volleyball match-up on Tuesday evening.  The Crimson took the match by set scores of 25-12, 25-15, 25-23. 

The Engineers, winners of two straight, improves to 6-5 overall and 2-1 in conference play while Smith dips to 3-9 on the season and 0-2 in NEWMAC matches. 

WPI never trailed in the opening set and was only down once in the middle stanza en route to racing out to a 2-0 lead.  The third set was nip-and-tuck throughout with 14 ties, the final of which at 23-23.  From there the hosts took control and closed out the match with consecutive kills by Wetmore and Kwatinetz. 

Kwatinetz paced all players with 11 kills while Wetmore finished with four.  Suela Miloshi (Needham, MA) has a strong all around match with eight kills and no errors in 17 attempts (.471 hitting percentage) to go along with 10 digs and a pair of second set service aces.  Catherine Reynolds (Concord, NH) posted a double-double with match-bests of 23 assists and 13 digs while Abbie Gilbert (Hopkinton, MA) stuffed the stat sheets with five kills, nine assists and six digs.  Kayleigh Campbell (Wilbraham, MA) reached double figures in digs with 10 and Colleen Mullins (Andover, MA) totaled five kills and nine digs. 

Evi Evgeniou (Thessaloniki, Greece), Caleigh Johnson (Georgetown, TX) and Kimani Freeman (Newark, NJ) all amassed four kills for the Pioneers.  Evgeniou chipped in with 10 assists, five digs and a pair of service aces while Jody Huange (Cranston, RI) and Freeman collected nine and eight digs respectively. 

WPI is back in action Thursday, traveling to Newport, RI for a 7pm match against Salve Regina.  Smith returns to the court on Saturday, hosting nationally-ranked Babson and Keene State in a tri-match that begins at noon.
