WORCESTER – Lilly Taylor (Weymouth, MA) handed out 25 of WPI's 29 assists and Abbie Gilbert (Hopkinton, MA) served up six aces as the Engineers defeated visiting Mount Holyoke 3-0 (25-12, 25-19, 25-11) in a NEWMAC women's volleyball matchup Tuesday night in Harrington Auditorium.
With the win, WPI ups its record to 8-6 (3-2 NEWMAC) while the Lyons dip to 3-12 (0-4 NEWMAC). For sevneth-year head coach Greg Poole, the victory was his 100th on Boynton Hill. He also reached the century mark at Western New England and Western Connecticut and totals 359 wins to date.
Taylor was the lone Engineer in double digits in any category as Suela Miloshi (Needham, MA) and Sarah Kwatinetz (Seattle, WA) each smashed seven kills to go with a total of 11 by Gilbert and Amanda Wetmore (Hudson, NH). Both Kwatinetz (2 solo blocks) and Wetmore did not commit an error, nor did Kaleigh Hess (Berea, KY) with three kills. Kayleigh Campbell (Wilbraham, MA), Gilbert and Kate Amrein (Nashua, NH) recorded eight, seven and six digs, respectively.
The Lyons were led by Sasha Simine (Kitchener, Ontario) with eight kills, followed by McKenna Crosby (Jonesborough, TN) and Sarah Bishop (Rutland, MA) with three apiece. Alexandra Keough (Endicott, NY) doled out 10 helpers for Mount Holyoke to go with 11 digs each by Chelsea Galicia (San Luis Obispo, CA) and Marianne Simon (Miami, FL).
A swipe by Simine staved off a set point in the first before a pair of miscues allowed the hosts to finish off the second. After Keough hit WPI with an ace, Gilbert rattled off four in-a-row for the 5-1 lead early in the third. Miloshi ended the night with a kill for the Engineers.
WPI is on the road the rest of the week heading to Brandeis Thursday for a 6pm first serve prior to a trip to Emerson for a 1pm start on Saturday. Mount Holyoke faces a tough test Saturday at MIT beginning at noon.
