Boston, MA --- Jillian Kay (Capistrano Beach, CA) hit .421 and notched a match-best 10 kills as Emerson defeated WPI, 3-0 (25-13, 25-23, 25-19), in a NEWMAC women's volleyball contest Saturday afternoon in Brown & Plofker Gymnasium.
The Lions, who began a season-best five-game winning streak with a 3-1 triumph over Babson, improve to 11-4 on the year and 4-2 in conference action. The Engineers, meanwhile, level out at 8-8 and 3-3, respectively.
Caroline Bond (Macungie, PA) added 31 assists to go with 11 digs by Grace Tepper (Kensington, MD). Logan Steenbergen (Glenview, IL) accumulated six of the team's 11 service aces.
For WPI, Abbie Gilbert (Hopkinton, MA) and Colleen Mullins (Andover, MA) totaled 15 kills to go with 19 digs. Lilly Taylor (Weymouth, MA) contributed 20 helpers while she and Kate Amrein (Nashua, NH) added seven digs each. Kayleigh Campbell (Wilbraham, MA) also recorded a half dozen digs in the contest.
Steenbergen used four of her aces to help Emerson stake a 6-0 lead in the first. Facing set point in the second, WPI capitalized on a pair of miscues prior to a kill by Amanda Wetmore (Hudson, NH) and an ace by Gilbert; however a service error gave the Lions the frame. The Engineers had the lead as late as 17-15 in the third but the hosts went on a 10-2 run to close out the day.
After a respite for exams, WPI is back in Harrington Auditorium on Saturday for a trimatch with Regis and Fitchburg State. Emerson heads to Wheaton on Tuesday.
