New London, CT -- Amanda Dake (Victor, NY) had a match-high 17 kills and career-high seven service aces leading host Coast Guard to a 3-1 win over WPI in a NEWMAC match Friday Night.
The Bears won by set scores of 25-18, 25-20, 24-26, 25-17.
Coast Guard improves to 17-7 overall and 6-3 in the NEWMAC while WPI drops to 13-10 overall and 4-4 in conference play. The Bears can secure a home game in the first round of the NEWMAC tournament on Nov. 5th with a win in the regular season finale at Wheaton next Saturday.
Mary Sweet (Chardon, OH) had a team-high five blocks, Veronica Hine (Virginia Beach, VA) had a team-high 13 digs while Makenna Martin (Granbury, TX) led the Bears with 20 assists.
Amanda Wetmore (Hudson, MA) led WPI hitting .409 with a team-high 11 kills and six blocks. Abbie Gilbert (Hopkinton, MA) added eight kills while Catherine Reynolds (Concord, NH) had a team-high 30 assists for the Engineers.
Coast Guard would score five straight to take an 8-3 lead in the opening set. The Engineers would score eight of the next 11 points to even it at 11-11. The Bears would later use an 8-1 spurt to open up a 22-13 en route to winning the opening set 25-18.
The Bears would score the first six points of the second set as Dake had three service aces in the run. With Coast Guard leading 10-2, WPI would score six of the next eight cutting the deficit to 12-8. Coast Guard would push the lead to as many as six at 23-17 and win the second set 25-20.
Coast Guard led the back-and-forth third set and had match point 24-23 before WPI ran off three straight points including a pair of kills by Coleen Mullins (Andover, MA) to force a fourth set with a 26-24 win.
In the fourth set, the Bears jumped out to a 6-2 lead and WPI would close the margin to 10-9 before Coast Guard scored four of the next five for a 14-10 lead and closed out the match with a 25-17 win.
The Bears are back in action tomorrow as they host New Paltz at 10:00 and Eastern Connecticut at 4:00. WPI plays the same two opponents Saturday in New London, facing Eastern Connecticut at noon and New Paltz at 2pm.
