Volleyball Drops a Five Set Thriller to Regionally-Ranked MIT

WORCESTER -- Senior Colleen Mullins (Andover, MA) had 12 kills and a team-high 13 digs, but WPI fell to MIT, 3-2, at Harrington Auditorium in the final NEWMAC volleyball regular season game for both teams.WPI won the first and third sets 25-21 and 25-20, but dropped the second, fourth and fifth sets, 25-23, 25-23 and 16-14.

Worcester's Engineers are now 14-12 overall and 4-6 in conference play while the guests, ranked eighth in the most recent NCAA Division III New England rankings, improve to 23-6 on the season and 7-3 in NEWMAC play.

WPI is the seven seed in the NEWMAC Tournament and will head to second-seeded Wellesley in a quarterfinal Tuesday at 7pm.  MIT is seeded third and will host sixth-seeded Emerson at the same time

Amanda Wetmore (Hudson, NH), a junior middle hitter, had a team-high 13 kills for WPI while sophomore Suela Miloshi (Needham, MA) had 11 digs and a team-high six aces, including four in the second set.

Freshman Catherine Reynolds (Concord, NH) had 35 assists, and senior Abbie Gilbert (Hopkinton, MA) and sophomore Jenna Galli (Cold Spring Harbor, NY) had 10 digs apiece, for WPI.

MIT was paced by Alexis Groark (Elwood, NY), who had a game-high 16 kills, including six in the second set and three in the deciding fifth set.

Alyssa Unell (Scottsdale, AZ) had 12 kills, Shea Landeene (Phoenix, AZ) added 11 kills, and Julia Caravias (Bloomfield Hills, MI) and Emily Condon (Orange, CA) contributed 10 kills apiece for MIT.

Andie Maloney (Manhattan Beach, CA) had a game-high 53 assists, and Madison Lee (Hillsborough, CA) a game-high 19 digs for MIT, who trailed, 7-4, in the fifth set.
