Northampton, MA --- Junior Ryan Moran (Pembroke, MA) struck gold as WPI Cross Country opened its 2013 campaign with a second place finish at the Smith Invitational on Saturday morning. Westfield State took the team title with 36 points, five points ahead of the Engineers (41), while NEWMAC foes Coast Guard (71), Clark (106) and Springfield (168) finished third through fifth.
Moran won the 5K event with a time of 16:26.93 and was followed by sophomore Tobin Dancy (Shrewsbury, MA) who crossed the finish line fifth (16:37.84). Junior Thomas Kostelak (Bernardsville, came in ninth with a time of 16:58.61. Other Engineers in the top-20 were junior Kyle Gerlach (Smithfield, RI) and freshman Austin Scott (Waddington, NY) in 12th (17:06.20) and 14th (17:07.59), respectively.
Junior Andrew Zayac (Plymouth, MA) (24th, 17:23.32) and classmate Patrick Murphy (Danvers, MA) (25th, 17:24.31) rounded out the top seven WPI finishers. Rookies Daniel Stomski (Dudley, MA), Daniel Mortimer (Shrewsbury, MA) and Nathan Stomberg (West Greenwich, RI) followed in 26th through 28th.
Men's Cross Country is off for a week before heading to Southern Maine on Saturday, September 21.
