Northampton, MA --- Ryan Moran (Pembroke, MA) successfully defended his individual title as the WPI men's cross country team claimed the team crown at the Smith College Invitational on Saturday.
The Engineers tied with NEWMAC-foe Coast Guard, but earned the title based on the tiebreaker involving the top five finishers. WPI boasted the first, second and fifth place harriers while the Bears occupied the third and fourth spots.
The meet featured five of the eight teams that will make a return trip on November 1 to compete for the NEWMAC Cross Country Championship. The Engineers and Bears each totaled 28 points while Clark (98) and Springfield (123) placed third and fourth. Babson shored up the NEWMAC contingent in seventh place (179).
Moran, who set the course record with a 16:26.93 in the 5K event last year, turned in an 8K time of 28:01.90 to claim back-to-back crowns. Austin Scott (Waddington, NY) followed his teammate by a tenth of a second while Justin Trott (North Hampton, NH) posted a 28:28.70 to claim fourth place in his collegiate debut.
Nathan Stomberg (West Greenwich, RI) came home sixth (28:49.10) and Tobin Dancy (Shrewsbury, MA) was eighth (28:57.90). Kyle Gerlach (Smithfield, RI) and newcomer Tristam Winship (Bedford, NH) rounded out the top seven with 14th (29:14.30) and 15th (29:27.10) place finishes, respectively.
WPI returns to action on September 20th at UMass Dartmouth.
