Northampton, MA --- Junior Julie Tevenan (Weymouth, MA) earned NEWMAC All-Conference accolades and freshman Emily Newman (Easton, MA) earned NEWMAC Rookie of the Year status as WPI tied the 1988 and 1990 women's cross country teams with a program-best fourth-place finish at the 2014 NEWMAC Cross Country Championships, hosted by Smith, on Saturday. No. 4 MIT claimed its eighth consecutive conference crown with an efficient 15 points while the Crimson and Gray totaled 128.
Tevenan, a repeat NEWMAC All-Conference honoree, turned in a 14th-place time of 19:07 and Newman was the quickest rookie with a 17th-place 19:18 en route to becoming the first WPI Cross Country student-athlete from either gender to earn a major year end award from the conference. She also snapped MIT's streak of seven consecutive rookie of the year awards.
Freshman Lea Strangio (Watertown, MA) was the next Engineer to cross the finish line as she clocked a 19:59 for 28th place. Sophomore Liz Hansen (Richmond, RI) came home 40th (20:20) as senior Caitlin Walde (Edmonds, WA) was 51st (20:42) and freshman Jasmine Higuera (Riverside, CA) was 58th (20:55). Senior Maria Grandoni (Framingham, MA) shored up the WPI top seven with a 61st-place 20:59.
The Engineers venture to Stanley Park in Westfield, MA for the 2014 ECAC Division III Cross Country Championships, hosted by Westfield State, on Saturday. The women's race is scheduled for noon.
