Women’s Cross Country Comes Home 12th at NCAA Regional

Williamstown, MA --- The WPI women's cross country team posted a 12th place showing at the NCAA Division III New England Regional hosted by Williams at Mt. Greylock Regional High School on Saturday. It is believed to be the best finish for Engineers since a 10th-place effort in 1989.

Junior Julie Tevenan (Weymouth, MA) clocked a 38th-place time of 23:00, which was 1.6 seconds shy of a top-35 finish. To date, only three different female student-athletes have accomplished at top-35 showing since the regional format began in 1981. Denise Crookes was the first to accomplish the feat in 1984 while Athena Demetry posted the program's best finish in 1988 (10th) and was joined in the top-35 by Maura Collins in 1989.

Freshman Emily Newman (Easton, MA) was two runners, and a fraction of a second, behind in 40th (23:00.7). Classmate Lea Strangio (Watertown, MA) took 82nd (23:54.0) while sophomore Liz Hansen (Richmond, RI) was 122nd (24:36.5) and senior Caitlin Walde (Edmonds, WA) was 128th (24:43.4). Senior Maria Grandoni (Framingham, MA) capped her career with a 151st time of 25:02.9. Freshman Jasmine Higuera (Riverside, CA) rounded out the Engineer lineup with a 184th-place 25:14.2.
