Women's Cross Country Reclaims Worcester City Championship

Paxton, MA --- Sophomore Emily Newman (Easton, MA) won the Worcester City Championship individual crown and Julie Tevenan (Weymouth, MA) earned the Brian Savilonis Award for the top finishing senior as WPI secured its seventh championship in eight years on Saturday at Moore State Park.

WPI tallied only 19 points as Worcester State posted 60 and Clark amassed 79. Fitchburg State was fourth (92) while Western New England was fifth (139) and Anna Maria was sixth (182).

Newman won in 19:46.5 and became the fourth different WPI winner in eight years while an Engineer has broken the tape seven of the last eight Worcester City Meets.

Worcester State freshman Mia Rogers (North Dighton, MA) prevented the Crimson and Gray from taking the top six places. Freshman Steffany Halfrey (Hubbardston, MA) earned bronze in a time of 19:52.1, a fraction of a second behind Rogers. Tevenan clocked a fourth place time of 20:03 as sophomore Lea Strangio (Watertown, MA) rounded out the top five.

Sophomore Jasmine Higuera (Riverside, CA) came home sixth (20:11.4) as junior Liz Hansen (Richmond, RI) posted a seventh-place time of 20:12.7 and senior Jessica Orr (Westerly, RI) crossed the finish line 11th (20:29).

The Boynton Hillers head to Franklin Park on October 10 for the All-New England Championships.
