BOSTON -- Sophomore Emily Newman (Easton, MA) earned NEWMAC Women's Cross Country All-Conference accolades to pace WPI's program-best third-place effort Sunday morning at the conference championship event, hosted by Wellesley, at Franklin Park. No. 3 MIT secured its ninth consecutive title with a 19 point effort. No. 26 Wellesley amassed 37 while the Engineers accumulated 117.
Newman, the 2014 NEWMAC Rookie of the Year, improved on her All-New England time (19:16.4) with a 14th-place 19:13. Senior Julie Tevenan (Weymouth, MA) also improved on her earlier time at the course with a 21st-place time of 19:26. Sophomore Jasmine Higuera (Riverside, CA) had an outstanding day to finish third for the Engineers, and 26th overall, with a time of 19:38, an improvement of just over 15 seconds.
Freshman Steffany Halfrey (Hubbardston, MA) completed the course in 19:42, which was 4.5 seconds quicker than her All-New England time. Sophomore Lea Strangio (Watertown, MA) shaved off over half a minute on her previous time (20:34.9) with a 39th-place 19:58. Junior Liz Hansen (Richmond, RI) came home 48th (20:09) while freshman Lauren Farry (Pittsfield, MA) rounded out the top seven with a 60th-place 20:33. Senior Jessica Orr (Westerly, RI) was 62nd in her final NEWMAC race.
WPI returns to action Saturday at the ECAC Championships, hosted by Williams.
