New Gloucester, ME --- Senior Austin Scott (Waddington, NY) earned bronze while the WPI men's cross country team placed third at the Bates Super XC Shootout Saturday at Pineland Farms. The scoring featured the top 12 instead of the top seven from each team.
The Engineers, who entered the meet ranked 10th in the USTFCCCA regional poll, totaled 196 points to finish ahead of Southern Maine (397) and behind regionally-ranked No. 7 Bates (116) and nationally-ranked No. 18 Tufts (171)
Scott paced the Crimson and Gray with a third-place 26:11.7. Freshman Avery Ingegneri (Warwick, RI) and junior Justin Trott (North Hampton, NH) also turned in top 10 efforts with the ninth (26:41.2) and 10th place (26:46.7) times, respectively.
Senior Nathan Stomberg (West Greenwich, RI) crossed the line 15th in a time of 27:05.9 followed by junior Tristam Winship (Bedford, NH) in 17th (27:07.5). Freshman Jake Scarponi (Barrington, NH) and sophomore Michael Brady (Medway, MA) came home 21st (27:20.9) and in 22nd (27:21.6).
Junior Jason Bugarin (Fitchburg, MA) handed in a 27:36.5 to end up 29th. Sophomore Matt Rabasco (Pittsfield, MA) took 34th (27:49.5) as classmate Mark Landergan (Newburyport, MA) claimed 36th (27:55.7). Senior Daniel Mortimer (Shrewsbury, MA) secured 38th (27:59.5) and classmate Kyle Morrison (York, ME) handed in a 28:02.2, good for 39th overall.
The Engineers will be busy next weekend with the Worcester City Meet at Moore State Park in Paxton Friday at 4pm. The top seven will return to action Saturday at the Williams Invitational hosted at Mount Greylock HS beginning at noon.
