Paxton, MA --- Led by junior Jason Bugarin (Fitchburg, MA), the WPI men's cross country team posted a perfect score to capture the program's 22nd Worcester City Meet crown in 23 years Friday afternoon at Moore State Park. Senior Daniel Mortimer (Shrewsbury, MA) (pictured below) claimed the Brian Savilonis Award for top finishing senior at the 50th annual event.
It is the second consecutive season the Engineers, who boasted seven of the top eight harriers, totaled just 15 points. They finished ahead of Division II Assumption (65), Worcester State (75), Clark (115) and Fitchburg State (122) to claim the program's 43rd title.
Bugarin broke the tape with a 28:03.1, just over 17 seconds ahead of freshman Jake Scarponi (Barrington, NH) (28:20.4). sophomore Matt Rabasco (Pittsfield, MA) came home third (28:24.6) followed by sophomore Remington Gaetjens (Limerick, ME) in fourth (28:26.3) and freshman Kevin O'Driscoll (Norwell, MA) in fifth (28:37.2).
Assumption's Ian Flanagan interrupted the Engineers with a sixth-place 28:37.9. Mortimer crossed the finish line seventh (28:43.7) while classmate David Goodrich (North Haven, CT) rounded out the Boynton Hiller's entries with an eighth-place 28:45.2.
The Engineers have eight men entered in tomorrow's Purple Valley Classic at Williams.
