Women’s Cross Country Ties Record for Most Worcester City Meet Titles

Paxton, MA --- Led by junior Jasmine Higuera Castillo (Riverside, CA) the WPI women's cross country team won its record-tying 11th Worcester City Meet title Friday afternoon at Moore State Park. The Engineers are now knotted with Holy Cross for the most women's crowns in the 33-year history of the event.

WPI, who has claimed eight of the last nine races, totaled 29 points while Division II East Region No. 2 Assumption accumulated 57, Clark amassed 68, Worcester State tallied 71 and Fitchburg State collected 153.

Higuera Castillo was the only Engineer to finish under 20 minutes with a third-place 19:46.9. Junior Lea Strangio (Watertown, MA) took fifth (20:18.0) as freshman Callie Schadt (Brewster, MA) was sixth (20:27.9), Sophomore Steffany Halfrey (Hubbardston, MA) was seventh (20:31.7) and junior Maggie LaRoche (Madison, NH) came home eighth. Senior Liz Hansen (Richmond, RI) handed in a ninth-place 20:50.4 while sophomore Carly Neeld (Williston, VT) crossed the finish line 24th (22:21.2).

Junior Emma MacIntyre (Grand Island, NY), senior Julia Smith (Cranston, RI), junior Gina Capobianco (Colonie, NY) and senior Theresa Inzerillo (Nashua, NH) also represented the Engineers.

Assumption's Rachel Avard was named the Brian Savilonis Award winner as the top finishing senior.

Women's Cross Country is idle until Saturday, October 8th when it head to the All-New England Championships being held at Franklin Park in Boston.
