New Gloucester, ME --- Paced by sophomores Tom Hanlon (Derry, NH) and Avery Ingegneri (Warwick, RI) the WPI men's cross country team placed third at the Bates Super XC Shootout, which scores the top 10 from each team with the 11th and 12th place runners used for displacement, Saturday at Pineland Farms.
No. 24 Bates totaled 127 to take the team title followed by regional No. 7 Tufts with 197. The Engineers, who are receiving votes in the regional poll, amassed 240 to place ahead of Southern Maine (298). Utilizing the traditional scoring system, the Bobcats (22) were followed by the Boynton Hillers (61), the Huskies (74) and the Jumbos (77).
"We entered today's meet looking to test our fitness from a summer of training and start the competitive portion of our season on a positive note," remarked head coach Brian Chabot. "We definitely accomplished the latter and while we certainly have many weeks ahead of us, I'm pleased with our conditioning."
Hanlon clocked a 26:52.3 to place sixth and Ingegneri posted a ninth-place time of 26:58.7. Sophomore Jake Scarponi (Barrington, NH) was 12th (27:06.0), senior Tristam Winship (Bedford, NH) was 16th (27.18.6) and classmate Justin Trott (North Hampton, NH) was 18th (27:26.7).
Chabot continued, "The conditions were warmer and more humid than we should encounter later in the season but that added to the challenge in front of us. Right now we welcome any and all challenges as they'll better prepare us for when we hit championship season."
Juniors Matt Rabasco (Pittsfield, MA) and Remi Gaetjens (Limerick, ME), and freshman Logan Gaudette (Holden, MA) claimed 31st through 33rd with times of 27:50.4, 27:52.1 and 27:59.4, respectively. Freshman James Kahn (Los Angeles, CA) debuted in 54th (29:04.9) and sophomore Kevin O'Driscoll (Norwell, MA) handed in a 29:43.0, which was 57th overall.
"I liked the way we finished off each race. I saw a ton of fight in both the women and men. With our focus on getting better each day that fight will pay dividends as we carry it forward.," concluded Chabot.
