Women’s Cross Country 10th at Star-Studded Purple Valley Classic; Third at City Meet

Williamstown & Paxton, MA --- The WPI women's cross country team placed 10th at the Purple Valley Classic, hosted by Williams at the recently renovated course at Mount Greylock High School, and was third at the 34th annual Worcester City Meet, hosted by Worcester State at Moore State Park, Saturday.

The top seven made the trek to Western Mass. to compete in what is widely considered the best Division III meet in the country this weekend and one of the best the entire season. With a total of 286 points, the Engineers, ranked 10th in the region, finished ahead of nationally-ranked No. 7 Ithaca (12th - 353) and No. 35 Rochester (16th - 427), as well as New England No. 9 Amherst (11th – 340) and the Atlantic No. 9 and No 10 teams in the form of Hamilton (14th - 407) and SUNY Plattsburgh (15th - 426), respectively. The Engineers sum was also five away from ninth-place which was held by No. 17 St. Lawrence (281).

No. 3 MIT (55) claimed the team title as the sixth-ranked Canadian entry from McGill (91) was second and No. 5 SUNY Geneseo (131) was third. No. 4 Williams (146) and No. 16 Dickinson (158) completed the top five, followed by No. 8 Middlebury (164), No. 26 Tufts (172) and No. 12 RPI (263).

Sophomore Sydney Packard (Georgetown, MA) once again led the Crimson and Gray and finished 13th in a time of 22:53.8. Sophomore Ariana Rozen (Carver, MA) was the next Boynton Hiller across the line in 62nd (24:26.5) and senior Emily Newman (Easton, MA) was two spots behind with a 24:27.5. Senior Lea Strangio (Watertown, MA) took 70th (24:37) as sophomore Callie Schadt (Brewster, MA) was 77th (24:46.3). Freshman Keely Nistler (Vadnais Heights, MN) placed 77th a half of a second later. Junior Steffany Halfrey (Hubbardston, MA) accounted for the final WPI entry with a 147th-place time of 27:03.

Closer to home, Worcester State, led by repeat individual champion junior Mia Rogers (N. Dighton, MA), needed 22 points to earn it's first-ever city crown by either gender. Clark was second (48) followed by the Engineers (70). Lesley was fourth (108) as Fitchburg State was fifth (121) and Anna Maria came home sixth (167). Clark's Kristen Glennie (Standish, ME) placed third to earn the Brian Savilonis Award for top finishing senior at the event.

Junior Carly Neeld (Williston, VT) guided the team with a seventh-place 21:18.6. Julie Tevenan '16 G'17 interrupted the collegiate scoring with an eighth-place 21:19.3. Freshman Amanda Lowther (Syracuse, NY) was 12th overall with a 21:41.3 as senior Emma MacIntyre (Grand Island, NY) was 14th (21:49.5). Senior Gina Capobianco (Colonie, NY) and freshman Madison Perry (Biddeford, ME) were 24th (22:38) and 25th (22:39.3), respectively.
