Dartmouth, MA --- Junior Sydney Packard (Georgetown, MA) was the runner up to lead WPI to a fourth-place finish Saturday at the UMass Dartmouth Buddy Harris Cross Country Invitational.
New England No. 6 Brandeis won the team title with 56 points, followed by Trinity with 105 and Division II Merrimack with 107. The 10th-ranked team in the region collected 127 points while NEWMAC foe Wellesley was fifth (225), and Division I Holy Cross was sixth (250).
Packard completed the 5K in a time of 18:14.7, just over 20 seconds behind Brandeis' Emily Bryson. Graduate student Emily Newman (Easton, MA) crossed the finish line in 26th (19:19) as sophomore Keely Nistler (Vadnais Heights, MN) and freshman Ciara Young (Milton, MA) were 29th (19:26.6) and 30th (19:28.7). Senior Steffany Halfrey (Hubbardston, MA) came home 41st in a time of 19:36.5. Senior Carly Neeld (Williston, VT) was 117th (20:37.3) and sophomore Amanda Lowther (Syracuse, NY) was 139th (20:52.6).
The sub-varsity race saw four WPI entries finish in the top 76 out of 187 runners, including an eighth-place showing by freshman Mary Scrivanich (Old Tappan, NJ).
The Engineers face an important test Saturday at the star-studded Purple Valley Invitational, hosted by Williams.
