Williamstown, MA --- Junior Sydney Packard (Georgetown, MA) was sixth overall, and fourth amongst NEWMAC runners, to pace the WPI women's cross country team in a ninth-place showing at the Purple Valley Classic, hosted by Williams at Mount Greylock High School.
No. 4 MIT won the meet with 67 points, followed by No. 8 Williams (81), No. 14 Tufts (114), No. 6 Middlebury (129) and No. 12 RPI (131). Baldwin Wallace was sixth (146), Coast Guard was seventh (173), and Amherst was eighth (179). The Engineers (241), the lone team to enter only five harriers, were 35 points ahead of Conn. College (276), who are both receiving votes in the regional coaches poll.
Packard handed in a 6K time of 23:04.1 while sophomore Keely Nistler (Vadnais Heights, MN) was the next Boynton Hiller to cross the finish line with a 47th-place 24:25.6. Graduate student Emily Newman (Easton, MA) followed in 53rd (24:30.9). Seniors Steffany Halfrey (Hubbardston, MA) and Carly Neeld (Williston, VT) cracked the top-100 as they were 71st (24:57.2) and 89th (25:28.7), respectively.
WPI is idle until October 13 when the programs travel to the Connecticut College Invitational.
