Brunswick, ME --- Junior Sydney Packard (Georgetown, MA) finished 45th to lead the WPI women's cross country team to its second consecutive 10th-place finish at the NCAA Division III New England Championships Saturday at Bowdoin. The Engineers also placed a program-best 10th in 1989 while the 2018 team set the program record for fewest points with 301.
MIT claimed the team crown with 87 points with Middlebury following with 108 and Williams with 115. Brandeis was fourth (136) as Tufts (159), Bates (187), Colby (191), Coast Guard (235) were fifth through eighth. Bowdoin, meanwhile, edged the Engineers by a point.
Packard clocked a 23:03.32, just over five seconds ahead of junior Ari Rozen (Carver, MA) in 48th (23:08.98). Graduate student Emily Newman (Easton, MA) and sophomore Keely Nistler (Vadnais Heights, MN) were separated by a fraction of a second as they were 68th (23:25.69) and 69th (23:26.03), respectively.
Freshman Ciara Young (Milton, MA) debuted with a 71st-place 23:28.14 as senior Steffany Halfrey (Hubbardston, MA) was 127th (24:18.28) and senior Carly Neeld (Williston, VT) was 202nd out of 399 finishers with a 25:14.28.
