Boston, MA --- Freshman David Reynolds (Andover, NH), sophomore Brian Brooks (Brewster, MA), senior Jake Scarponi (Barrington, NH), and junior Logan Gaudette (Holden, MA) each earned All-NEWMAC honors as the WPI men's cross-country team placed second at Sunday's NEWMAC Championship hosted by Babson at Franklin Park.
No. 12 MIT, who has won every conference championship since 1999, posted 18 points for another title, while WPI, the seventh-ranked team in the USTFCCCA New England poll, was the runner-up for the sixth consecutive season after posting a program-low 42 points.
Coast Guard finished third (99 points), followed by Springfield (122), Babson (156), Wheaton (158), Emerson (212), and Clark (228).
Reynolds' third-place finish is a program-best for the Engineers and was nine seconds shy of attaining Freshman of the Year. The prevouis best showings were Brooks a season ago and Ryan Moran in 2015. Brooks earned All-NEWMAC honors for the second straight year with his 10th-place time of 26:09. Scarponi improved by seven spots from last year's race, finishing 11th (26:10), and Gaudette — who missed the All-NEWMAC honors by eight seconds last year — came in 12th (26:20).
Senior Tom Hanlon (Derry, NH) was one spot and six seconds shy of an All-Conference showing. Classmate Avery Ingegneri (Warwick, RI) was 19th overall with a time of 26:55, and sophomore Alex Simoneau (Attleboro, MA) clocked in at 27:13 to finish 22nd.
