Wolfgang and Bagby Help Women's Soccer Dodge Worcester State and Weather in Sunday Triumph

WORCESTER -- Hannah Wolfgang (Holliston, MA) and Madisyn Bagby (Aurora, CO) accounted for goals as the WPI women's soccer team defeated local non-conference rival Worcester 2-1 on a rainy and warm Sunday afternoon on H. Carr Field at Alumni Stadium.  The Engineers, who was playing their fifth match in 10 days to open the season, are now 2-3 while the Lancers drop to 0-2-1 in 2023.

The hosts began the scoring early in the first half after a Worcester State foul.  Josephine Conlon (Hoboken, NJ) served the direct kick on two bounces and found Hannah Wolfgang (Holliston, MA) past the Worcester State defenders.  From there the senior one-touched past the Lancer netminder to the far corner for the senior's second goal of the campaign at 9:09.

The Lancers leveled the match at 1-1 midway through the opening stanza as Olivia Magierowski (Brimfield, MA) rifled a shot into the right corner at 24:18 for her first career tally.

WPI's Olivia Toolin (Bedford, NH) nearly broke the tie in the 41st minute but her shot hit the crossbar and went out of bounds. During the opening 45 minutes, WPI outshot the guests 4-2 and attempted all four corner kicks of the half.

After a lighting delay extended the halftime intermission to nearly 40 minutes, the Engineers quickly jumped on the attack and were awarded a penalty kick nearly three minutes into the second half after Delina Chávez (Glastonbury, CT) was fouled inside the box.  Bagby calmly stepped up and buried the PK for her second goal of the season at 47:57.

Wolfgang had the best scoring bid the rest of the way but her shot was stopped by a diving effort from WSU netminder Mallory Dupuis (Leominster, MA) and the Crimson and Gray were unable to get to the rebound.

WPI goalkeeper Lili Hellerman (Ashland, MA) made four saves en route to earning her first victory of the year while Dupuis was credited with six stops for the guests.

The hosts finished with 13-6 edge in shots an attempted eight of the match's nine corner.

The Engineers open NEWMAC play on Saturday, entertaining Wellesley in a 1pm match, the middle contest of a WPI tripleheader on H. Carr Field at Alumni Stadium.  Worcester State returns home two matches next week, the first of which a 7pm non-conference tilt with Eastern Connecticut on Wednesday.
