Biddeford, ME --- In a matchup of teams that opened the 2023 season with lopsided victories on Friday evening, the WPI women's soccer team was defeated 3-0 Saturday evening by host University of New England 3-0 on Saturday night. The hosts are now 2-0 on the season while the Crimson and Gray see their record even out at 1-1 in 2023.
The Nor'easters opened the scoring in the 17th minute when Emily Martin (Georgetown, ME) knocked home a pass form Tori Keyes (Hooksett, NH) at 16:33 to take a 1-0 advantage. The hosts doubled its lead at 33:48 when Brooke Pierotti (Scituate, MA) found the back of the net on a play that featured a double assist from Bella Reil (Berwick, ME) and Lindsey Butler (Pelham, NH).
UNE held an 11-8 edge in first half in shots but the visitors accounted for five of the nine shots on goal in the opening 45 minutes.
The host scored the only goal of the second half after Lizzie Frattaroli (Boston, MA) buried a goal that Martin and Keys were credited assists with in the 80th minute.
Sydney Gillingham (Standish, ME) was credited with the shutout for the hosts after recording five saves. Riann Divine (Albuquerque, NM) made two stops for the Engineers.
Lottie McLeod (Newton, MA) and Hannah Wolfgang (Holliston MA) were credited with three and two shots respectively for the Boynton Hillers.
WPI is back on the field on Tuesday, hosting Wesleyan at H. Carr Field at 7pm. University of New England returns to action a week from today, entering local rival Southern Maine at noon.
